To the Waters and the… Waters

who wants to be rescued?

Come away, O human child!
To the waters and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand,
For the world’s more full of weeping than you can understand.

William Butler Yeats
The Stolen Child.

Arguably one of the most famous writers of all time Yeats immortalized the beauty of Sligo in his poems and plays.

Sligo is a historic and stunningly beautiful seaside town situated on the north-west coast of Ireland. The bolded line from the poem above became Sligo’s tourism slogan. In case you are wondering, Sligo gets it’s name from the Irish word ‘Sligeach’ – a reference to the shelly river – Garavogue on which it is situated. Sligo is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west so there you go, water again. Not to mention that it’s usually raining 8 days out of 7… well not really but it wouldn’t be much of a lie either.

I’m trying to keep all my articles short so I won’t get too much into details. If you like water, you’re into surfing or if you just want to live by the Ocean then Sligo is the place for you. The landscapes in County Sligo are breathtaking (I’ll make a new post with a selected gallery of photos taken in County Sligo). Should you visit Sligo? Hell YES. Should you live here? I would say no, you can get depressed fairly easy if you hate the Autumn season. I lived in Sligo for nearly 7 months but it took me like 4 to fully accommodate with the weather. And I still miss the sun. Was it worth it? Yes. The very few sunny days we had there made me appreciate life more. And I met extraordinary people.

Sligo is also famous for the third level education. Institute of Technology Sligo (which I attended for my 3rd year Bachelor Degree) is considered to be one of Ireland’s best collages. Just so you can make yourself an idea, a team of 4 students from this college won Microsoft’s Imagine Cup. Imagine Cup is the world largest student competition. Nearly 400.000  students entered the completion past year so the fact that this particular team won the big trophy at the New York finals says much about the education level.

I am currently living in Dublin, doing my 6 months internship at a Software Development company, but I consider moving back to Sligo for the 4th year’s Honours Degree. I’m also considering giving Imagine Cup a try. Will see.

Kiss Me, I’m Irish!

Kiss me, I'm Irish!

Hello World!

I’ve been planning this for a while but it never seemed like the right time to do it. So here I am writing my first post of the most anticipated (oh yeah…) blog.

Why am I doing this?

That’s a good question. Life was so intense in the past couple of months and this makes me wanna share more. Life it’s all about moments, people, places, decisions and details. Maybe I’m afraid I’ll forget some of the details, I think that’s a good enough reason for starting this blog. You may ask: why don’t you start a diary then? . But what’s the point of a diary if you keep it for yourself? It dies with you.

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away

I’ve been having problems breathing lately. There’s so much beauty in this world, you just have to open your eyes. I had to come to Ireland to learn how to appreciate a sunny day. How to be happy. How to make others happy. I think one of our problems – as human beings – is the routine. We sometimes get assimilated.

I truly hope that at least some of you will learn something from this blog. This blog is about  people, places, details and moments that made me happy.

I would like to thank “the first” and “the second” German girls for inspiring me.
